The Emento Patient Guide is freeing up nursing time – "patients are prepared and know what is going to happen"
At Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Randers Regional Hospital, patient guides helps patients to prepare for appointments, surgery, rehabilitation and much more. This gives the nurses at the department more time to help patients who need extra support.
Pernille Brøchner Jacobsen is one of the nurses who has participated in the development of the patient guides for the patients at Department of Orthopedic Surgery:
- We experience that patients are prepared and know what is going to happen. Many patients already know the physical exercises when they meet the physiotherapist to be instructed in how to do their rehabilitation exercises one week before their operation. This means that the time spent on instructing the patients can be spent on the patients who need more support.
The first patient guide was made for patients undergoing knee surgery. Later, guides for hip and shoulder replacement followed. Patients get access to the personal patient guide at the consultation before surgery. According to Pernille Brøchner Jacobsen this makes sense because it gives the patients several weeks to prepare before surgery.
The patients use the app-based guide to manage all the practical aspects. “We try to use the patient guide to turn waiting time into preparation time during which patients are informed about diet, smoking, exercising, fasting etc. before the operation”. The department has found out that most patients also watch the videos in the patient guide before their operation.
No more long written patient guidelines
The patient guides present tasks, information etc. on a timeline, and the patient can only access the content which is relevant for them at a given time during their pathway.
- We help the patients navigate what and when something is important by timing when the patient is notified of new information in the app. Before, the patients had maybe read the long, written guideline in full several weeks before their operation,
says Pernille.
The content in the patient guides is designed and developed by the department using the Patient Guide platform from Emento. This way the information fits the reality patients meet at the department.
